The Finnish Council of State has invited Baltic Sea Action Group to be a part of the Finnish delegation to UN Ocean Conference to be held in New York 5th – 9th of June, 2017. The aim of the conference is to support the Implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 14: Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development. Participants of the conference are encouraged to register voluntary commitments geared at supporting positive actions for seas – the method that BSAG has been using since 2008.

The Conference aims to be the game changer that will reverse the decline in the health of our ocean for people, planet and prosperity. BSAG will arrange a side event The new normal: Public-private cooperation to combat eutrophication and climate change in the Baltic Sea region” focusing on the cooperation between public and private sector in their joint effort to save the Baltic Sea. There will be examples presented by companies taking part of the Nutrient Cycling Breakthrough in Finland business ecosystem managed by BSAG. BSAG working method where environmental challenges, actors and solutions are connected via commitment process or i.e. under the umbrella of Nutrient Cycling Ecosystem, is a procedure that has aroused global interest.

The UN Ocean Conference is expected to gather the heads of states and ministers of the countries active on development of the seas and representatives of intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations, specialized agencies and companies. The amount of the participants is expected to be 4000 – 5000. The Finnish Delegation is led by the chief secretary Hannele Pokka from the ministry of Environment in Finland.
