Energy and Nutrient Flows in the Food Chain. The Big Picture is Missing
Varsinais-Suomi and Satakunta counties are in many respect crucial for Finnish farming and Food Stuff industry. The purpose of this study is to highlite the energy and nutrient flows of the Food System. How much is originating from the local are and how much is imported from outside? What is the realistic approach for reuse of nutrients locally? Shall some of the nutrients be exported in order to close the balance? What is the real amount of bioenergy potential after we reduce the amount of energy used to produce the biomass? This study will produce relevant information for long term design of environmental resources in county as well as on country and Baltic levell.

The objective ofthe study is to produce a tool that can be used to evaluate the food production and consumption as well as total biomass production on any given are. In minor scale the are can be one farm and in major scale the whole Baltic are. The county scale has been sellected for this study. The impact for locall decission making is believed to be the best in this scale.
Tritonet ltd. is the coordinator of the project but only part of the work will by carried out by our own organization. Co operation with Universities and research institutes is most wellcome. Discussons for finanzing have been started .
Varsinais- Suomi and Satakunta are the areas of key interest. To verify the concept tool Kanta-Häme will be a reference county for the project.
