Russia and Finland to cooperate for remediating Krasnyi bor hazardous waste dump – BSAG provides expertise

The Ministers of the Environment of Finland and Russia met on 16/6/2016 at St. Petersburg Economical Forum to discuss cooperation on the elimination of leakage of hazardous substances from the Krasnyi Bor landfill into the Baltic Sea. The ministers agreed that the countries will cooperate on finding solutions for Krasnyi bor and that the expertise of Baltic Sea Action Group (BSAG) and the Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE) will be utilized for compiling a road map on how to proceed. BSAG and SYKE representatives attended the meeting.

The next step of the process is the meeting of St. Petersburg Initiative in Moscow this Thursday 23. June, where BSAG meets with the Russian parties. St. Petersburg Initiative was established in 2013 at the Baltic Sea Forum hosted by Prime Minister Medvedev and has since then been a tool e.g. for improving the situations at Krasnyi bor and Kaliningrad environmental threats.​
