Baltic Sea experts inspected M/S Baltika, a strong reinforcement of oil combat resources for the Gulf of Finland today at Arctech Helsinki Shipyard

SET Group’s Commitment and successful Finnish-Russian co-operation behind the birth of the new multipurpose vessel

Some 70 invitees visited the icebreaking rescue vessel M/S Baltika April 9th 2014 at Arctech Helsinki Shipyard. M/S Baltika is a very tangible result of a Commitment and good cross-border co-operation. SET Petrochemicals made a Commitment at the  Baltic Sea Action Summit 2010 to consult decision makers in Russian oil industry and transportation network on regarding the need to improve oil combat resources in the Gulf of Finland.

SET Petrochemicals´ Commitment was instrumental for the preparations for signing of the shipbuilding contract and for promoting the oil combat aspects of the new ship.  The unique icebreaking multipurpose vessel was ordered by the Russian Federal Agency of Sea and River Transport and is to be operated by the Russian Marine Emergency Rescue Service, Gosmorspassluzhba. Baltika is to be based in the Gulf of Finland and it will considerably improve the ice breaking and oil combat capabilities on the open sea in the northern part of the Baltic Sea.

The vessel represents a completely new type of innovative technology. It has an asymmetric hull, patented oblique design and three 360 degrees rotating propulsors, which allow the vessel to operate efficiently sideways, astern and ahead.

The one-of-a-kind vessel is the concrete outcome of top level Finnish ship design by Aker Arctic, and Finnish-Russian advanced ship building. As such, it proves the capabilities of Finnish ship building skills, and the added value of international co-operation.
