Reduction of air emissions by supplying liquefied biogas (LBG) for marine use

In 2014 Gasum acquired a majority shareholding in the liquefied natural gas (LNG) company Skangas which is the leading player in the Nordic LNG market. The company supplies LNG for marine, industrial and heavy road transport needs. Switching from oil products to LNG results in the complete elimination of SOx and particulate emissions and a reduction in direct NOx emissions of approximately 85%. In addition, LNG use reduces direct emissions by up to 25%. By using renewable liquefied biogas (LBG) it is possible to further decrease CO2 emissions.
In order to develop the circular economy at the industrial level, to reduce CO2, SOx, NOx and particulate emissions and to promote the recycling of nutrients, Gasum is committed to developing opportunities for LBG use as a marine fuel. The development project includes the following steps: Biowaste from ferries is collected and transported to Gasum biogas plants where it is processed into biogas. The nutrients from biogas production can be utilized as fertilizers in agriculture or in industry. Upgraded recycled biogas is liquefied in a liquefaction plant. The final LBG product is transported to the ferries using existing LNG road tankers.
To further reduce CO2 emissions, Gasum is committed to developing opportunities for biogas use in maritime transport and promoting the circular economy by recycling nutrients. The objective of the commitment is to reduce emissions from ferries and ships (CO2, SOx, NOx and particles).
