BSAG promotes satellite services for the Baltic Sea

The Baltic Sea Action Group (BSAG) and the Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation (Tekes) have agreed to promote satellite services related to the environment, safety and transport in the Baltic Sea region. Tekes represents Finland in the European Space Agency (ESA).

The contract is linked to the Integrated Applications Promotion (IAP) program of ESA. The IAP program is dedicated to the development, implementation and pilot operations of integrated applications that will lead to sustainable services. The goal is to provide innovative added value to services by combining various space assets, such as telecommunications, earth observation, navigation, and human spaceflight technologies, integrating with existing terrestrial assets.

An IAP Ambassador Platform is an office that acts as an ambassador for ESA’s Integrated Applications Promotion for a particular region or theme. The office also promotes the IAP for users and stakeholders. BSAG was selected as the Baltic Sea Region Ambassador Platform because it has the required expertise in environmental, safety and transport issues and has a good contact network in the Baltic Sea region.

The Baltic Sea Action Group (BSAG) is a neutral Finnish foundation whose mission is to improve the wellbeing of the Baltic Sea. Our guidelines for operations are derived from HELCOM’s Baltic Sea Action Plan. BSAG’s work is based on cooperation and concrete actions. BSAG is active in the fields of eutrophication, clean and safe maritime activities, hazardous waste, and innovative solutions.

In February 2010 the BSAG, together with Finnish President Tarja Halonen and Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen, organized the Baltic Sea Action Summit (BSAS) in Helsinki. The Heads of State of the Baltic Sea countries plus over 140 companies and other organizations made concrete commitments to the Baltic Sea. The process continues and the commitments made are being realized.
