Meeting with European Commission’s Vice-President Jyrki Katainen

BSAG presented a joint statement to Jyrki Katainen, Vice President of the European Commission together with three organizations, to discuss the role of bio-nutrients in the Circular Economy (CE) Action Plan, expected to be released on 2 December 2015.

On 16 November BSAG, European Biogas Association, European Phosphorus Platform and European Compost Network met the Vice President Jyrki Katainen, responsible for Employment, Growth, Investment and Competitiveness, to discuss the role of bio-nutrients in the CE Action Plan and to demonstrate our support for the Commission’s work towards the implementation of Circular Economy.

The informative and constructive meeting highlighted the European Commission’s first policy actions in order to enhance the bio-nutrient circular economy. These include the revision of EU Fertilisers Regulation and the creation of quality standards for secondary raw materials to be used as recycled fertiliser components.

Vice-President Katainen stated that the CE Action plan is the start of the process, not a final program hence encouraged European actors to provide further input to the Commission regarding the CE Action plan.

BSAG underlines the importance of nutrient cycling at the core of Circular Economy and welcomes Commission’s efforts to create an EU internal market for secondary raw materials and recycled bio-nutrients in combination with recovery of energy.
