Educational material for machine operators to prevent the water impacts in forestry
In the past ten years, a significant amount of new knowledge has been accumulated about the water impacts of forestry. However, this information has not yet reached all practitioners – especially machine operators. KOPPI produces easily applicable water protection materials for professionals in the field.

A lot of new research has emerged on the water impacts of forestry. Current training materials, however, are primarily targeted at forest planners. There is significantly less material tailored for machine operators, even though many decisions that affect water bodies are made directly in the field.
In stakeholder discussions held by BSAG in 2024, a clear need emerged for educational material that is easy to absorb and takes the realities of daily work into account. KOPPI responds to this need.
Practical training for machine operators
The project produces motivating, clear, and practical training materials for forestry machine and excavator operators. The materials are designed to be easy to use even during the workday – for example, during breaks or on-site.
With the help of these materials, machine operators can significantly reduce the water-related impacts of their work. The aim is to promote the adaption of water-friendly practices in field-level decisions and actions.
Collaboration between researchers and practitioners
The project promotes dialogue between researchers and practitioners. The materials are developed in collaboration with both researchers and machine operators. The project brings research knowledge directly to the hands of professionals and strengthens operators’ expertise, particularly in water protection.
The project also gathers insights into the challenges of implementing water protection in day-to-day work. Through the project, machine operators have the opportunity to share their everyday observations and development needs with researchers and decision-makers.
PROJECT PHASES
2025
Assessing the starting point
Through interviews and workshops, the project will identify what kind of training materials are most needed and what factors complicate the implementation of water protection measures in practice. The focus is on situations that are particularly significant for water impacts and commonly encountered by machine operators.
2026
Producing training material
The training material will be developed in collaboration with machine operators and researchers. The goal is to translate scientific knowledge into everyday language and highlight the best current practices.
2026
Distributing the material
The material produced in the project will be widely promoted to machine operators. The outreach will make use of channels commonly used by operators.
