“Seeing a white-tailed eagle still moves me every time. As a teenager, I felt deep angst while looking at a poster illustrated by Erik Bruun, where an eagle soared across my room wall. The species was on the verge of extinction, as the pesticide DDT—still permitted at the time—accumulated in the birds through the food chain. I feared I would never see this magnificent creature in real life. But during my adult years, the white-tailed eagle population has made a strong recovery. It proves that when we want to, we can succeed in environmental protection.”
Rather than focusing on individual species, the Baltic Sea Action Group takes a holistic approach to improving the Baltic Sea. The condition of all Finnish waters impacts the well-being of the Baltic Sea.
Kristiina is inspired by BSAG’s science-based work, its focus on dialogue, and the pursuit of practical solutions.
She has worked in diverse roles across the media industry for over 30 years, with experience as a journalist and producer in both newspapers and magazines. At the University of Eastern Finland (UEF), she has been engaged in science communication for broad public audiences.
As a paddler on the Baltic Sea and inland waters, she finds strength and serenity in her beloved aquatic element.
“I want to believe that harmful practices affecting our waters can be changed for the better. But time is running out. Through my communication work, I aim to highlight the solid expertise and deep passion BSAG’s specialists bring to protecting the Baltic Sea.”
