Towards sustainable agriculture and forestry

The goal is to accelerate the transition towards a future of agriculture and forestry, where economic, social, and environmental sustainability reinforce one another. By applying regenerative agriculture and water-resilient forestry methods, crop production and forest management can be increasingly profitable in the future. These same methods help reduce climate emissions and nutrient runoff into water bodies, while also combating biodiversity loss.

In the VERKKO project, sustainable solutions are embedded into practice through a farmer- and landowner-driven approach, supported by peer learning, practical examples, and regional networks. The project focuses on South-Eastern Finland but also operates in the Päijät-Häme region. The models and operating practices are developed to enable broader application across Finland. 

Climate change brings new challenges to agriculture and forestry

Extreme weather events, droughts, and floods complicate farming and forest management, and these challenges will only intensify in the coming decades. Heavy spring and autumn rains, dry summers, and severe storms are already part of everyday reality, with direct impacts on crop reliability and forest health. For forest owners in South-Eastern Finland, the spruce bark beetle has become all too familiar. 

Based on scientific research and farmers’ practical experience, methods have been developed to help manage risks and strengthen the resilience of agriculture and forestry. Regenerative farming and water-resilient forest management practices are already applied among pioneers. However, widespread adoption requires practical examples and networks that support peer learning.

Networks and peer support 

BSAG’s long-standing experience with the Carbon Action initiative has demonstrated the benefits of network-based approaches to translating research into practice. Through networks, farmers learn from one another, share experiences, and receive support in adopting new methods. Events such as field days bring the latest research knowledge directly into farmers’ everyday work and help embed sustainable practices. 

The VERKKO project expands the existing farmer network around regenerative agriculture and supports farmer-led initiatives. The aim is to facilitate the formation of local groups and the organization of self-directed events, allowing the change to spread more widely at the grassroots level. 

Many of the farmers involved in the Carbon Action Network have also expressed interest in network-based collaboration in forestry. Our partners in the forestry sector have echoed this need. In the VERKKO project, we build on lessons learned from Carbon Action by bringing together forest owners, forestry professionals, and other key stakeholders. Regional networks facilitate knowledge sharing, enable the development of joint solutions, and strengthen climate-resilient forestry practices. 

The project has received funding from the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development. The funding has been issued by the Centre for Economic Development of South-Eastern Finland, the responsibilities of which are currently handled by the Economic Development Centre of Southeast Finland.
