The Environmental Efficiency Design Index currently under development within IMO does not consider specific regional features. Deltamarin commits to develop a region specific index for the Baltic Sea area. This index will reflect such specifics as short sea shipping, frequent port calls, operation in archipelago, seasonal ice cover, use of icebreaker assistance, sensitivities of the environment.

To create a tool that can be used as a basis for port and waterway fees in a way that the fees will encourage sustainable shipping and ship technology. It is expected that in long term this will help to minimize the environmental impacts of sea transportation. If successful, similar approach could also be adopted to other sea areas where regional features are of major importance.
