Biochar filter; Research on using biochar mixed soil in filtering impurities from water running from agricultural lands to the Baltic Sea
Organisation: UPM-Kymmene Corporation
Time: 2/1/2010 – 2/1/2011
Description:
The parties have agreed to pursue a research that will define if biomass based charcoal/ash residue, resulting from gasification of biomass in for example BTL-process or pyrolysis process, can be mixed into soil and thus create a filter that removes impurities from water running from agricultural lands to the Baltic Sea.
The research will concentrate to following areas:
– analyse technical and chemical properties of biochar for use as soil conditioners
– testing biochar in laboratory conditions and with field test for soil nutrient retention capacity and propensity to reduce nutrient loading to waterways
– assessment of technical solutions, formulations and application machinery
– assessment of biochar needs and whether such an amount will born in processes
Objective of the Commitment:
To investigate the possibility and feasibility of proposed a solution. Thus creating basic knowledge for future work on the area in which no scientific results of practicality, feasibility, and practical tests has been carried out before
