Commitment made in 2025

DURATION

2025–2028

MAA-akatemia is a cooperative promoting sustainable farming whose mission is to help food producers, farmers, and land and environment stewards improve their quality of life and nurture healthier agricultural ecosystems. To support this mission, MAA-akatemia develops and delivers advisory services, training programs, and a range of support initiatives — including access to specialist advisory services and a knowledge-sharing community — for practitioners and advocates of diverse approaches to sustainable food production and land stewardship.

The goal of MAA-akatemia is to foster the wider adoption of regenerative farming, organic production, agroecological methods, and permaculture principles. These methods support carbon sequestration in soils and reduce nutrient emissions from land use and agriculture. The agroecological movement and the application of permaculture principles also strengthen a more holistic sustainable lifestyle in both rural and urban settings.

MAA-akatemia is making a Baltic Sea Commitment to Baltic Sea Action Group (BSAG) for the years 2025–2028. Through this commitment, the cooperative demonstrates its strong dedication to the holistic development of sustainable agriculture and land management, as well as its ambition to reduce nutrient and chemical loads in waterways to levels that ensure the balance of terrestrial and marine ecosystems.

The commitment focuses on farmer and research collaboration through the Carbon Action platform, scaling regenerative farming, and developing agroecological pilot initiatives. The commitment’s actions are divided into four areas:

COMMITMENT GOALS

1. Scaling regenerative farming in the food market

  • MAA-akatemia recognizes that mainstreaming regenerative farming requires that the entire food chain—from farm to consumer—recognizes it as a form of sustainable agriculture. MAA-akatemia commits to advancing the development of national criteria, verification, auditing, and certification for regenerative farming in collaboration with BSAG and other stakeholders.

2. Supporting farmer collaboration on the Carbon Action platform

  • MAA-akatemia promotes the exchange of knowledge and expertise between Carbon Action projects and its advisory team to increase environmental and farmer resilience and well-being.
  • Concrete forms of collaboration may include participation of MAA-akatemia advisors in Carbon Action projects, joint communications, events, and the co-development of new solutions.
  • MAA-akatemia will highlight advisors who have completed the Maaneuvos training as “top soil health experts” on its website.

3. Strategic advocacy to mainstream regenerative farming

  • The objective of MAA-akatemia is to promote understanding of regenerative farming in its operations and to support the mainstreaming of land use practices that restore ecosystems in Finland. As part of this work, MAA-akatemia seeks to influence national strategic work and political dialogue.

4. Cooperation to support sustainable rural lifestyles and diverse farms

MAA-akatemia fosters sustainable rural living and diversified farming by bringing together sector actors, supporting regenerative farming, and increasing knowledge of agroecology, permaculture, and small-scale self-sufficiency production.ää maaseutuasumista ja monimuotoista viljelyä tuomalla yhteen alan toimijoita, tukemalla uudistavaa viljelyä ja lisäämällä osaamista esimerkiksi agroekologiasta, permakulttuurista ja kotitarvetuotannosta.

Through this commitment, the MAA-akatemia cooperative joins the Carbon Action business network, which enables collaboration among food chain actors and the development of their own activities to advance regenerative farming. In addition, the cooperative commits to communicating about the Carbon Action initiative through its own channels.

The commitment spans three years. Its progress will be reviewed annually in cooperation with BSAG, documenting the various forms of collaboration and concrete actions while planning activities for the following year.
