Sustainable Urban Infrastructure Helsinki

Organisation: Siemens Osakeyhtiö

Time: 9/19/2011 – 12/31/2013

Description:

We are going to conduct a sustainable urban infrastructure study together with Aalto University of the city of Helsinki.
The study will analyze the environmental impact of the city infrastructure and evaluate technological means to reduce this impact.

Objective of the Commitment:
There are over 80 million inhabitants living in the Baltic Sea catchment area and most of them live in cities. Through improving the urban infrastructure we can improve the conitions of the Baltic Sea.

In restraining climate change, the control of green house gas emissions is essential. The Helsinki study investigates the city´s environmental impact as well as identifies ways in which this can be reduced. The main approach for ananlyzing this impact is carbon dioxide emissions.By reducing emissions we can reduce the impact on global warming and improve the conditions in the Baltic Sea. The study identifies levers were these emissions can be reduced with the help of new technologies.

The objective of the study is to identify levers how to reduce city emissions and thus reduce euthrophication in the sea. The study will include a separate report on the environmental impact of Vuosaari port and potential means to reduce it´s carbon footprint.
