Anna Klemelä oversees BSAG’s marine protection projects and related stakeholder cooperation.

Anna has participated in developing BSAG’s model for private marine protection from the beginning. In BSAG’s model, the protection project is done in collaboration with BSAG, the landowner and environmental authorities. Anna oversaw the Gullkrona protection project, done in 2019-2022 and located in the Archipelago Sea. Establishing private marine protected areas continues to be an important part of their job.

Anna also does communications on marine nature topics. They are happy to write and speak about the Baltic Sea, its species and their protection.

Anna has a master’s degree from the faculty of biological and environmental sciences at the University of Helsinki, majoring in environmental change and global sustainability. Additionally, Anna has done studies on marine biology, communications and gender studies.

“The most inspiring thing about my job is getting to witness the underwater biodiversity in the Baltic Sea. News about the Baltic Sea is often understandably bleak but it is important to also remember the lively and colourful world underneath the surface. There is a lot of life worth protecting in the sea.
