MAA-akatemia strengthens the foundations for sustainable and regenerative farming

Baltic Sea Commitment, Carbon Action

MAA-akatemia supports farmers and land stewards in building more sustainable and diverse food systems, while promoting soil health and reducing nutrient loads into waterways. In cooperation with BSAG, the cooperative puts regenerative agriculture into practice, supports farmers’ work, and helps implement the objectives of their Baltic Sea Commitment.

Building the Food System of the Future

MAA-akatemia is a cooperative that began operations in 2025. It supports food producers, farmers, and land and environmental stewards in improving their quality of life and fostering healthier agricultural ecosystems. The cooperative develops and provides advisory services, training, and support solutions that promote a holistically managed, nutrient-cycling food economy that is economically, ethically, and ecologically sustainable.

MAA-akatemia’s goal is to gradually transform the current fossil-based food production system into a regenerative, biodiversity-rich system that utilizes nature’s ecosystem services, producing higher-quality food and a wide range of societal benefits.

Together for a Cleaner Baltic Sea

MAA-akatemia’s activities directly support BSAG’s work for the Baltic Sea and the climate. Regenerative agriculture reduces nutrient runoff into waterways, sequesters carbon in soils, and improves soil resilience. In this way, it helps combat eutrophication and the climate crisis while enhancing yield stability for farmers.

BSAG brings together the key actors needed to save the Baltic Sea and has identified advisory organizations as one of the crucial enablers for scaling regenerative agriculture. This is precisely why the partnership with MAA-akatemia is so significant for BSAG: it creates practical support and expertise for actions that promote the well-being of soils and water bodies.

A Commitment to the Baltic Sea

MAA-akatemia has made its first Baltic Sea Commitment for the years 2025–2028. Through this commitment, the cooperative strengthens its objectives to advance sustainable and regenerative agriculture and to reduce nutrient and chemical loads on waterways to levels that safeguard the balance of terrestrial and marine ecosystems.

In practice, the commitment supports farmers through four concrete actions: developing advisory services and tools; increasing expert collaboration and knowledge sharing; developing criteria and verification methods for regenerative agriculture; and strengthening sustainable lifestyles and biodiversity-rich farming in rural areas. The collaboration helps farmers adopt regenerative practices and also increases impact in political decision-making and food sector practices.

Cooperation with BSAG is extremely important for the newly established MAA-akatemia. The work carried out on the Carbon Action platform inspires us. We want to take it further together. BSAG’s ways of advancing regenerative agriculture are practical and holistic.
