Green Flag Raised on Topelius Day

On Topelius Day, 14 January 2026, BSAG will raise a new flag reflecting the current state of the Baltic Sea. Instead of Finland’s traditional blue and white, the Baltic Sea flag features a green cross on a grey background. Through the Baltic Sea Green Cross Flag campaign, BSAG aims to draw attention to the sea’s critical condition and to the urgent need to protect it.

There is a great deal of diversity in the marine nature surrounding the island of Gullkrona, but only some of this area was protected. We decided to make Gullkrona a conservation pilot – and the largest private conservation area in the Archipelago Sea.

UPM is committed to BSAG’s Ship Waste Action initiative, and we challenge other charterers to join us. We move millions of tonnes of cargo every year. Discharging wastewater ashore is not difficult, but it requires cooperation and coordination. We have been extremely well received by ports and shipping companies – everyone is ready for change.
