Agriculture’s climate footprint based on field-scale assessment (AGCLIMATE)
Tools for monitoring carbon balance and greenhouse gas emissions from fields
The AGCLIMATE project develops science-based solutions for measuring and reducing greenhouse gas emissions from agricultural land. The aim is to build tools for monitoring carbon balance and emissions from fields, and to integrate these measurements into farm and product carbon footprint calculations.
Official name
Agriculture’s climate footprint based on field-scale assessment – AGCLIMATE
Duration
April 2025 – December 2027
Persons in charge
Jari Liski and Layla Höckerstedt (Finnish Meteorological Institute)
Organisations
AGCLIMATE is led by the Finnish Meteorological Institute.
Research partners include Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke) and the University of Helsinki. Business partners with their own sub-projects are Valio, Hankkija, Vaisala, Datasense, and Cense Analytics.
Funder
Business Finland (Co-Innovation 2025)
Project supports Finnish companies in reducing climate impacts
Innovations from the project support climate-smart farming, enhance transparency, and create new export opportunities for Finnish companies.
Project Key Activities
- Developing and implementing a monitoring system for field-level carbon balance and N₂O emissions, using measurements, modelling, and satellite data.
- Creating climate-smart agricultural practices and promoting their adoption on farms.
- Linking field-based measurement results with product- and farm-specific carbon footprint assessments.
- Enhancing the export potential of climate-friendly products and services through credible data and methods.
- Making results available openly via a real-time Field Observatory system for stakeholders.
A wide network of companies and researchers in collaboration
AGCLIMATE is led by the Finnish Meteorological Institute. Research partners include Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke) and the University of Helsinki. Business partners with their own sub-projects are Valio, Hankkija, Vaisala, Datasense, and Cense Analytics.
In the steering group are additional companies: Atria, HKFoods, and Lantmännen.
AGCLIMATE is part of Valio’s Food 2.0 project cluster. Valio’s Food 2.0 flagship project is a broad research, development, and innovation programme aimed at renewing Finland’s food system to make it more sustainable, profitable, and export oriented.
