Hankkija is one of Finland’s largest and longest-standing operators in the agricultural sector, and it has a long history of advancing the protection of the Baltic Sea. In 2022 the company made a Baltic Sea Commitment through which it promotes the principles of regenerative farming, and joined the Carbon Action business platform.
Collaboration in a seashell
Hankkija made a Baltic Sea Commitment to the Baltic Sea Action Group (BSAG) for 2022–2026 and at the same time joined the network of the Carbon Action platform, which enables cooperation between food chain actors to promote regenerative farming. In its commitment, Hankkija focuses on measuring and improving soil health, on the principles of regenerative farming and on reducing environmental load. Precision farming is a particular area of expertise for Hankkija, and the company uses it as one of its key tools in regenerative farming. Hankkija trains its own personnel and its customers in regenerative farming and develops its product and service range to support the wider use of soil and crop production data. In addition, Hankkija highlights the work of the Carbon Action platform in its own communications.

Baltic Sea Commitment
The Baltic Sea Commitment for 2022–2026 focuses on measuring and improving soil health, promoting the principles of regenerative farming and reducing environmental load. Hankkija brings to the market product and service solutions that support this whole, trains its personnel and customers, and communicates about regenerative farming together with BSAG.

Training in regenerative farming for personnel and customers
Hankkija adds material on regenerative farming produced by the Carbon Action platform to its ongoing training, delivered both internally to its own personnel and externally to customers. The aim is that the personnel are able to offer solutions based on regenerative farming on the farm and to embed the principles of regenerative farming in product and service development.
Hankkija actively provides information on environmentally friendly solutions suited to the agricultural sector and increases farmers’ awareness of the principles of regenerative farming. In addition, Hankkija develops the sourcing criteria for its grain trade to serve the production chain of batches produced in line with the principles of regenerative farming, together with the Carbon Action platform.

The Smart Farm concept and precision farming solutions
Hankkija’s Smart Farm (Älykäs Maatila) concept brings into large-scale use new digital solutions for measuring and improving, among other things, yield levels, nutrient use efficiency, soil health and carbon sequestration. The principles of regenerative farming are taken into account in developing the concept, and the use and timing of nutrients are fine-tuned with modern machine technology.
Through its own breeding activities, Hankkija increases the diversity of species and varieties suited to northern conditions as well as the share of domestic feed raw materials. Feeding planning and feed optimisation based on measurement and analysis services reduce the environmental load of livestock farms.

Communications and promoting regenerative farming
Hankkija communicates actively about regenerative farming to its own personnel, partners and customers, for example at contract farmer events, in customer magazines, in webinars and at its own events.
Hankkija supports regenerative farming practices and takes part in studying the impact of this work in practice. In any pilot projects, Hankkija also covers part of the costs of the research data obtained from the farm.

Hankkija Oy is a Finnish agricultural and machinery trade company that supports Finnish farmers in producing high-quality food. The company offers everything needed for crop production, such as seeds, fertilisers, plant protection products and fuels, and is Finland’s largest grain buyer as well as a significant grain exporter. For livestock producers, Hankkija manufactures feeds at its factories in Turku, Seinäjoki and Kotka, and feeds are exported to more than 30 countries. Hankkija also operates in the machinery trade, forest management, hobby animals, garden trade and hardware trade. Hankkija owns two thirds of the logistics company Movere Oy, and the group’s net sales in 2025 were EUR 793 million with a workforce of one thousand employees.
