Sinebrychoff has worked together with Baltic Sea Action Group (BSAG) for the benefit of the Baltic Sea since 2015. In 2023 the brewery made its third Baltic Sea Commitment, with regenerative agriculture as the main theme.

Collaboration in a seashell

Sinebrychoff and BSAG have worked together for the Baltic Sea since 2015, when the brewery began to apply its own knowledge to improving the ecological status of the Baltic Sea. Every year, Sinebrychoff produces Christmas Beer, made with malt barley that can be traced back to the field where it was grown. Since 2021, the barley has been cultivated using regenerative farming methods aimed at improving soil health, increasing carbon sequestration and supporting biodiversity. In 2023 Sinebrychoff made its third Baltic Sea Commitment, with regenerative agriculture as the main theme. Through the commitment, the brewery implements the Brewing Tomorrow sustainability programme of its parent company Carlsberg and aims to remain a frontrunner in the brewing industry in regenerative agriculture.

Baltic Sea Commitment

The Baltic Sea Commitment for 2023–2027 focuses on regenerative agriculture, which is strongly linked to the Baltic Sea. Together with BSAG, Sinebrychoff is advancing regenerative agriculture by developing its own operations, working with suppliers and improving water efficiency in production.

Developing regenerative agriculture

Sinebrychoff sets up an in-house expert group focused on regenerative farming, which takes forward the content of parent company Carlsberg’s Brewing Tomorrow sustainability programme and cooperates with BSAG.

Sinebrychoff continues to produce regeneratively farmed malting barley and the Christmas beer made from it, trains its employees in the principles of regenerative farming and explores extending the concept to other products and to sugar beet cultivation.

Cooperation with farmers

Sinebrychoff encourages an increasing number of farmers to move to regenerative farming in cooperation with BSAG and other stakeholders, among other things through training organised for farmers.

Sinebrychoff investigates how the wet spent grain generated as a by-product of beer production can be used in line with the principles of regenerative farming and the circular economy between the brewery, livestock farms and malting barley farmers.

Other sustainability work

During the commitment period, Sinebrychoff improves the water efficiency of beverage production from the current 2.1 litres to 2 litres per litre of beverage produced, in line with the Alliance for Water Stewardship level it has already achieved.

In connection with the traditional Nicolas Sinebrychoff Challenge sailing regatta, Sinebrychoff highlights the importance of protecting the Baltic Sea and the company’s own actions to accelerate Baltic Sea work..
