Hazardous substances including residuals of pharmaceuticals and other organic compounds are not effectively degraded at common municipal wastewater treatment plants. Kemira is developing advanced oxidation technologies for removal of those contaminants. The most promising ones will be developed to applicable technical solutions.

In the OXY project Pöyry is testing the possibilities to reduce internal nutrient loading by artificial oxygenation on Tammionselkä outside the city of Kotka.
A detailed project plan and a budget for a three year period of oxygenation have been established.
Project partners are: City of Hamina, Port of Hamina, Baltic Tank Oy, Kymen pelastuslaitos, Nordea Finland, Tasku Oy, Cursor and Kymenlaakson Sähkö Oy.

The globally operating NGO Oceana has obtained funds to start its Baltic campaign in 2011. In January, Oceana will open an office in Copenhagen to serve as the base from which this campaign will be led. The work will be focused on reducing illegal fishing and improving the network of marine protected areas.
In the initial two-year phase of the Baltic campaign, Oceana will conduct in-port investigations and at-sea expeditions to identify and document illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing in the Baltic as well as unmanaged fisheries, leading to increased enforcement, reduced IUU fishing, and improved compliance with fishing limits. Additionally, Oceana will document vulnerable marine habitats in the Baltic Sea that deserve official designation as a Marine Protected Area, as successfully done in other European countries.

Together, the organizations are in the forefront of putting waste reception facilities in place in the Baltic Sea ports. Bain has analysed the situation and made recommendations, ECC has provided the requirements and Copenhagen/Malmö port is starting the construction of a new section of the port having all required equipment.

Yara’s novel measure of preventing phosphorus leakage from fields is based on the TraP -research project that has tested the use of gypsum to trap phosphorus in fields. Gypsum was delivered and spread in Lieto (90 ha), in Pöytyä (10 ha) and in Nauvo (10 ha) during 2010.
According to the test area results from of MTT, SYKE and TTS, gypsum has the potential to decrease particle-bound phosphorus discharge by 60% and dissolved phosphorus by 50%.
